Un évidement pour le pouce et un crochet pour les doigts à l'extrémité du manche assurent une bonne transmission de la force lorsque la lame est tirée. Une variété de matériaux, de styles et de formes de lames sont proposées pour répondre à des exigences spécifiques, y compris des lames adaptées aux câbles ronds et aux câbles sectoriels. Certains couteaux de démontage incluent un sabot de guidage au niveau de la pointe de la lame pour éviter d'endommager l'isolation des câbles.
